Three standards, each run by its own method
Lumex runs IEC 62305-2:2024, NFPA 780-2026 and AS 1768:2021 on Voltrace. Pick the standard your project works to, and the assessment, the verdict and the report follow that standard's own method.
Start with where the project is
The standard is usually set by the country, the client or the authority having jurisdiction. Each page below explains what that standard asks and how Lumex runs it.
IEC 62305-2:2024
The international standard, adopted nationally across most of the world, including as EN IEC 62305 in Europe, IS/IEC 62305 in India and AS/NZS IEC 62305 in Australia and New Zealand.
NFPA 780-2026
The US standard for installing lightning protection. Its risk assessment sits in Annex L, which is informative and often asked for by owners, insurers and authorities.
AS 1768:2021
The Australian standard from Standards Australia. Its risk method is a trimmed down form of the 2010 IEC approach, set for Australian conditions.
New Zealand uses AS/NZS IEC 62305 only, so a New Zealand site runs as an IEC 62305-2:2024 assessment. Australia accepts both AS 1768:2021 and AS/NZS IEC 62305.
How the three methods compare
Different risk models, not versions of one calculation. Lumex keeps each engine separate, and a figure from one is never mixed with another.
| What the method decides | IEC 62305-2:2024 | NFPA 780-2026 Annex L | AS 1768:2021 |
|---|---|---|---|
| The risks judged | One combined risk R for injury to people and physical damage, plus a frequency of damage F for internal systems | Four risks, R1 to R4, one per kind of loss | Four risks, R1 to R4, one per type of loss |
| What each risk is built from | Nine risk components | Eight risk components | Eight components, direct and indirect |
| The tolerable line | RT, with 10⁻⁵ per year as a representative value, which national rules may change | Defaults of 1E-5 for R1 and 1E-3 for R2 and R3; the owner or authority may set others | 10⁻⁵ for R1 and 10⁻³ for R2 and R3; the owner picks R4 |
| A quick screen first | No, the full method every time | Yes, ND against NC, before the detailed assessment | No, the full method every time |
| The protection Lumex recommends | The smallest set of measures that brings R and F within their limits | The smallest set that brings every judged risk within its tolerable value | The least protection that clears all four (C.3.4.2) |
| What Voltrace is checked against | The worked examples in Annex F | A separate implementation of Annex L | Version 5.0 of the Standards Australia tool, and Appendix C |
Working to a standard we do not run yet?
More standards are on the way, each built as its own engine and checked the same way. Tell us which one your projects follow, and it helps us decide what comes next.
Thanks. Your request is in.
We read every request. We may email you when that standard is ready.
Lumex computes the method of the standard you choose, IEC 62305-2:2024, AS 1768:2021 or NFPA 780-2026, and shows the working. It does not certify a structure. You may not issue or submit a Lumex output until a competent person, qualified where the structure is located, has reviewed the inputs and the result and signed it.
Each standard sets its tolerable values in its own way, and every assessment in Lumex states the values that applied.
